Fish You Might Hook

Albacore Tuna: These speedsters are a real treat if you're lucky enough to hook one. They're known for their powerful runs and tasty meat. Albacore typically show up in warmer months and put up a fight that'll test your skills. Anglers love targeting these fish for their delicious steaks and the bragging rights that come with landing one.

African Pompano: Don't let the name fool you - these fish are found in many warm waters around the world. They're a beautiful sight with their silvery bodies and long, trailing fins. African Pompano are strong fighters and can grow to impressive sizes. They're often found near structures like reefs or wrecks, so we'll need to navigate carefully to find them.

Agujon Needlefish: These long, slender fish are a blast to catch on light tackle. They're known for their acrobatic leaps and fast runs. Agujon Needlefish are often found near the surface, so keep your eyes peeled for their distinctive shape skimming across the water. They're more of a sport fish than a eating fish, but the fight they put up is worth it.

American Angler: This is a catch-all term for some of the most popular gamefish in North American waters. Depending on where we're fishing, this could include bass, walleye, or even some saltwater species. Each has its own unique challenges and rewards, making for an exciting day of varied fishing.

Alligator Gar: Now here's a fish with some prehistoric flair. Alligator Gar are massive, armor-plated fish that can grow over 8 feet long. They're found in freshwater systems and are known for their toothy grins and powerful fights. Catching one of these monsters is a true trophy experience - just be careful of those teeth when you're unhooking them!

Time to Cast Off

So there you have it, folks - pontoon boating is the way to go for a relaxed day on the water that can still pack in plenty of excitement. Whether you're an avid angler looking to try a new fishing platform or just want to spend a day cruising with friends and family, our pontoon boats have got you covered. Trust me, once you try pontoon life, you might not want to go back to shore!

Learn more about the species

African Pompano

African pompano are a real treat to catch - they're not just pretty, but put up a great fight too. These silvery, disc-shaped fish start life near shore as juveniles with long, trailing filaments. As adults, you'll find them in deeper waters from 30 to 250 feet. They're part of the jack family, so expect some speed when you hook one. African pompano are attracted to shiny, moving objects, making them a blast to target with jigs or live bait. You'll have the best luck fishing for them in warmer months when they're most active. Keep an eye out for structure - they love hanging around reefs and ledges. If you're after a big one, our local hotspot is about 10 miles offshore where we've had luck with 30-pounders. Just remember, they've got sharp gill plates, so handle with care when you bring them in.

Agujon Needlefish

Agujon needlefish are a unique catch that'll keep you on your toes. These slender predators, with their long, toothy beaks, are often found in shallow waters or near the surface. They typically mature around 18-20 inches but can grow up to a whopping 5 feet. You'll spot them by their dark blue backs and silvery sides with a distinctive blue stripe. Agujon are most active in warmer months, feeding on small fish and zooplankton. They're known for their acrobatic leaps and speedy runs, making them a fun fight on light tackle. When targeting these guys, try using shiny spoons or jerkbaits like the Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnow. A word to the wise: their sharp beaks can be dangerous, so handle with care. If you're using bait, give it a quick jerk when you feel a bite - these smart fish are known to mouth the bait without getting hooked.

Albacore Tuna

Albacore tuna are a popular target for anglers looking for a mix of sport and good eating. These sleek, bullet-shaped fish typically run 18-25 inches and 20-45 pounds. You'll find them in deep, subtropical waters on both U.S. coasts. They travel in massive schools up to 19 miles wide, which can make for some exciting fishing when you locate them. Albacore are known for their delicious white meat - it's the only tuna that can be labeled and sold as "white meat tuna." Spring through summer is prime time, as they're spawning and actively feeding. Trolling is often the best method to catch these fast swimmers. A pro tip: once you hook one, work quickly. If it gets away, it'll likely spook the whole school. Position your lures 50-90 feet behind the boat for best results. Just remember to limit consumption due to mercury levels.

Alligator Gar

Alligator gar are living dinosaurs and a real trophy catch. These prehistoric-looking fish can grow over 6 feet long and top 100 pounds. You'll find them in the southern U.S., lurking in rivers, lakes, and bayous. Late summer is prime time, when hot, dry weather concentrates them in deep river bends next to shallow pools. These armored giants can breathe air, so look for them rolling at the surface. Use heavy tackle and strong line - their scales are like armor plate. For bait, go big with carp, buffalo, or large shad on a 5/0 treble hook under a big, bright bobber. Be patient - gar are ambush predators and might take a while to commit. When they do, hold on tight! Remember, in many areas it's catch-and-release only, so handle them carefully. Watch those teeth - they're no joke!

American Angler

The American angler, also known as the goosefish or monkfish, is a unique bottom-dweller that'll test your skills. These flat, rocky-colored fish can grow up to 55 inches, but you'll usually find them around 39 inches and 26 pounds. They're ambush predators, spending most of their time partly buried in soft, sandy bottoms at depths of 1,200 feet or more. Unlike their deep-sea cousins, they don't use a glowing lure. Instead, they have head spines that mimic small organisms to attract prey. When fishing for anglers, use large live baits like mackerel or squid. Drop your bait to the bottom and slowly drag it across the seabed. Be patient - these fish are masters of camouflage. Once hooked, they put up a stubborn fight. A pro tip: when bringing one aboard, watch out for those powerful jaws. Their white, firm meat is prized by some, but be prepared for the occasional parasitic worm.
